St. Paul Trip

After a summer of unpredictable weather delays, we were beyond thrilled to finally make it to St. Paul! The Aleut team made the most of our time on the island, and it was an unforgettable experience. From exploring moss berry patches and visiting the seals to appreciating the natural beauty of St. Paul (even with the fog!), we felt truly welcomed.

Our visit was filled with meaningful connections. We had productive meetings with the City, visited Aquilina Lestenkof and the language program at the Civic Center, enjoyed a warm and memorable Elders Luncheon, and stopped by CBSFA and the tribe to continue fostering community ties.

A huge qaĝaasakuq to everyone who joined us for the meeting! It was wonderful to see and visit with you all, and we look forward to returning soon.

We made it!

WELCOME HOME

Submitted by Michael Boyce
Michael Boyce, Angela Raines, and Donna McGill Cameron visiting Unalaska.

I first learned of my family’s Aleut heritage over 50 years ago. Our Nana, Oleta never talked with us about it. My mother and aunties began to teach us kids. We began to hold family cultural gatherings, started an Aleut Book Club for the cousins, and culminating last summer with three of us cousins visiting Unalaska to see where Nana grew up. When we met some of the elders who helped us with our search for information, they said, “Welcome home!”

Happy 90th Birthday to Annie Mack

Submitted by Joanne Jenckes and Calvin Mack, Sr.

Family and friends gathered on October 19, 2024, to celebrate Annie Mack’s 90th birthday. Annie was overjoyed to spend time with her loved ones and, true to her lively spirit, she filled the day with laughter. Known for her infectious sense of humor, Annie treasures listening to her family share stories – she even chimed in with a few of her own! Annie enjoys staying active by walking as much as she can, taking rides to spot moose, and, of course, indulging in her favorite treat—ice cream. We feel incredibly blessed by her vibrant energy, quick wit, and lasting health. Happy Birthday, Grandma Annie!

Happy 50th Anniversary to Jim and Joanne Jenckes

Submitted by Joanne Jenckes

We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary, August 10, 2024 with a week long family vacation in Saint George, Utah. We first met while Jim was serving our country in the Air Force at the radar station in Cold Bay, Alaska. The weather had a major part in our meeting— in other words, I was traveling and got stuck in Cold Bay and couldn’t get back to King Cove. The bad weather can have a magical ending—50 years later, our love for each continues to grow! We give God all the glory for the blessing of our marriage.
