Growing Food and Community in the Aleutians

In the small village of Nikolski, located on Umnak Island in the Aleutian Chain, gardening has become both a source of fresh, nutritious food and a way to strengthen community ties. Despite challenges like strong winds, short summers, and limited supplies, the village has successfully used geodesic dome greenhouses to grow a variety of crops including strawberries, limes, tomatoes, and more!
