Margaret M. Berntsen (1934-2020) was a shareholder born in Nelson Lagoon, AK. She was a proud Unangax̂ business owner, fisherwoman, restaurant owner, AIDS Foundation advocate, cook, teacher, and much more. Below, is a great poem about King Cove, her second home, that she wrote for the May 2008 Aleutian Current!
FOND MEMORIES
By Margaret Berntsen Wisbey
The sound of the sea
As it crashes free
Takes me to the days gone by
I’ve missed the waves
As they whisper brave
And the wind piles the white caps high
The curve of the COVE
Mt. Dutton above
The shore birds so wild and free
Nothing can compare
With the safe harbor we share
And listen to the wind and the sea
King Cove is a place
That God in His Grace
Saw fit for all those who would care
Many Aleuts & other nationalities came
And we can all lay claim
To this beautiful cove we all share
Though some of us leave
You can all believe
Our roots are silent and deep
We are never away
How can we stray
We return to King Cove in our sleep
